Natural Remedies For PMS Listed and Described

by Patsy Hamilton

There are a number of natural remedies for PMS that could be effective. There is probably no single remedy that will address all of the PMS symptoms that a woman may have. Even prescription PMS remedies do not relieve them all. Women who suffer from several different symptoms often take several different medications, trying to get relief. It is the same with herbal and other natural remedies for PMS. Usually the most effective relief is achieved by using a combination of different herbs or botanicals, with minor lifestyle and dietary changes.

In alphabetical order, the most common PMS symptoms are aggression, anxiety, backaches, bloating, breast tenderness, depression, fatigue, food cravings, headaches, insomnia, irritability, mood swings, overeating, tearfulness, trouble concentrating and weight gain. If you have all of these, trying to find relief may seem impossible. Luckily, most women do not have every single symptom listed here every month. Sadly, some women have more and experience greater severity. Many of the different symptoms are related and most fit neatly into three groups; emotion, appetite and pain.

Bloating is more than likely caused by decreased levels of estrogen, since estrogen is involved in salt and water retention and fluid balance. Natural remedies for PMS that may help with bloating include increasing phytoestrogens in the diet and reducing salt intake. Phytoestrogens are plant components that have an estrogen like effect on the body. Isoflavones, included in some PMS remedies are one type of phytoestrogen.

Some studies indicate that women who eat a diet rich in soy and other plant foods have less PMS symptoms. Foods that are high in sodium and salt cause most women to retain fluid and feel bloated.

Weight gain may either be caused by bloating or overeating. PMS remedies that reduce fluid retention should reduce weight gain if bloating is the cause. If overeating or food cravings are the culprit, another remedy may be necessary.

Some studies indicate that fluctuating hormonal levels may not be the root cause of PMS, since hormone levels naturally fluctuate throughout the cycle. Women who suffer from PMDD, the worst form of PMS, have lower than normal levels of serotonin circulating in the blood stream. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is involved in regulating emotion, sleep and appetite. Low levels of serotonin could increase sensitivity to hormonal changes.

Serotonin taken orally will not reach the brain and relieve symptoms, because of something called the blood/brain barrier. One of the natural remedies for PMS is 5-HTP, which can pass through the blood/brain barrier and be used by the body to create serotonin. PMS remedies that contain 5-HTP can relieve all of the emotional issues, the food cravings, the overeating, the sleep problems, the trouble concentrating and studies have shown that it can relieve migraine headaches, as well. If you are currently taking one of the prescription PMS remedies, such as an antidepressant, check with your doctor before using 5-HTP.

Chasteberry is one of the natural remedies for PMS that specifically addresses the pain of all types that women may experience during this phase of their cycle. Clinical studies have shown that it effectively relieves breast tenderness. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, inhibits COX-2 enzymes, which cause inflammation, without affecting COX-1 enzymes, which protect the lining of the stomach.

That leaves only fatigue. Increasing intake of B-complex vitamins during this time should increase energy, but a good multi-vitamin, along with a healthy diet and regular exercise will do a lot to increase energy levels throughout the month. Another one of the natural remedies for PMS, tribulus terrestris, is used by athletes to increase energy levels. Additionally, tribulus increases levels of DHEA circulating in the bloodstream, which the body uses to create all of the different hormones. Tribulus, chasteberry, 5-HTP and isoflavones are ingredients can only be found together in a few natural remedies for PMS. Most products that you see at the drug store do not contain any of them. Some only contain vitamins, which are important, but are not believed to relieve PMS symptoms. For more information about where to find the best natural remedies for PMS, please visit the Menopause and PMS Guide website.

Sex and Menopause: What Every Woman Needs To Know

by Colette Bouchez

As we enter mid-life, changes abound . But for women, it's not only hot flashes and mood swings that can dominate. Indeed many gals discover that the most disconcerting change of all can be the change in they experience in their sex drive.

In short - it can all but disappear.

For some, replenishing those dwindling hormones -with Mother Nature or Father Pharmaceutical - can be a big help.

But what if hormones aren't on your agenda? Not to worry - there are still things you can do!

Indeed, oftentimes small changes in areas of your life you might not even connect with sex - like nutrition, exercise, or even sleep - can make a huge difference in your ability to not only enjoy sex, but actually look forward to intimate encounters.

Here are five things from my book " Your Perfectly Pampered Menopause" that you can try right now to get your libido off and running!

# 1: Take a Nap

Although this probably doesn't sound either sexy or romantic, experts say that fatigue is the number one killer of great romance, not to mention terrific sex. Because night sweats and hot flashes may be keeping you awake at night, don't be ashamed to steal away for a cozy nap any time you get the chance. If you arrange for a rendezvous' with your partner upon waking, you may be surprised to discover how attuned you have become to what may have been "hidden" sexual desires.

# 2 : Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables

In addition to whatever " aphrodisiac" foods you may have heard of, at mid-life doctors say one of the best sex boosters is a healthy diet. Studies show that when the basic requirements for good nutrition are met, hormones function better. And that means you are less likely to feel the "bumps" in your perimenopause road as easily or as often. Also try eating six small meals a day rather than three large ones. This can help keep blood sugar stable which not only increases your energy level, but also can improve your mood and your desires.

# 3 : Quit smoking

You know it's bad for your heart and lungs - but did you know smoking can also put a damper on your sex life? In studies conducted on perimenopausal and menopausal women, doctors found that smoking as little as one pack a day had a greater ability to decrease sexual function than the hormonal changes of menopause! Smoking is also linked to a decrease in estrogen, which can impact sexual response and vaginal sensitivity. The good news: Just months after you stub that last butt, you'll see an appreciable change in your health - including a upswing in your desire for sex!

# 4: Take Time To Relax
Whether it's curling up with a great book, planting petunias in your garden, or taking a pottery class, take time to relax and watch the benefits flow in the bedroom! Indeed, studies show that stress can be the number one thief of sexual satisfaction, and, some experts say it can put a real damper on desire. The link involves an entire cascade of hormonal activity that is set in motion by your response to stress. Once it starts, it can impact a variety of physiological functions, not the least of which is mood - and desire. And, even if you have the desire to make love, being under stress can inhibit both your ability to become aroused and to reach orgasm. So, take a few deep breaths and learn to relax - and you might be surprised at how much better you feel about making love.

5: Buy New Shoes . . .
or get a new hairdo, change your color, go for a make-over, get a facial, even lose a few pounds. Anything you can do to feel better about yourself IS going to make you feel better about relating to your partner, not just in the bedroom, but in ALL the rooms of your life! Certainly there are important physiological reasons why sex may not be on the top of your list during this time of your life. Sometimes, however, how we feel about ourselves, and even how we view the idea of aging itself, can greatly influence how we feel about having sex and even influence what we think about our own sexuality. Doing whatever you can to enhance your self image - in your own eyes- often translates into feeling better about your partner, your relationship, and ultimately your sexuality and your sensuality

Menopause-Demystified What You Need to Know

by John Mancini

Menopause has a bad rap, at best. This is one of the most misunderstood times in a woman's life. However, it is natural and can be controlled through both medicinal and non-medicinal means. The following information regarding menopause will, hopefully, answer some questions and offer some treatment options for the millions of women who will soon be entering this next stage of life.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been the standard of care for menopausal women since the 1970's. In fact, more than 40 million women every year receive prescriptions for this treatment. However, in recent years this form of treatment has come under attack as it is being thought that it causes an increase in heart disease.

The use of soy and vitamin E as a treatment for the symptoms of menopause are gaining momentum among those women who do not want to use hormone replacement therapy. Nevertheless, these options have not been subjected to the same scrutiny as prescription drugs. The reason for this is that vitamins, minerals and other non-traditional methods are classified as food items and not drugs. Therefore, the studies that may have been conducted are not done in accordance with the FDA guidelines. This means that any information gleaned from such studies may not be accurate.

There are a myriad of symptoms that signal the beginning of menopause. Irregular bleeding, menstrual cycles that are longer or shorter than normal, hot flashes and night sweats are some of the more common signs. It is important to note however, that even with a list that is this varied in symptoms that not all women have the same symptoms or experience the same severity of those symptoms. One woman's experience of during this time in her life may vary greatly from the experiences of her friends and family.

It is best to talk to your health care provider if you suspect that you are entering the early stages of menopause. Together, you will be able to decide upon a course of action to alleviate some of the more uncomfortable aspects of this time of your life. Treatment does not need to follow either traditional or non-traditional methods, in fact, for many women a combination of the two works best.

The first step to alleviating some of the fear that is associated with menopause is to understand what menopause is. Simply put, it is the time when a woman's ovaries cease to function. The ovaries control such functions as producing eggs and estrogen, when the ovaries stop working, so does the production of these two things. The cease in production of estrogen can lead to a fluctuation in hormone levels and can cause osteoporosis later in life. This is why hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) is the treatment of choice.

One last piece of information, menopause is not considered complete until the absence of a menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. During this time, you may experience an occasional cycle. It is important to note that pregnancy may still occur, if menopause is not completed. It would be wise to continue any birth control that you prefer during the menopause phase, if pregnancy is not wanted.

John Mancini has been writing about Menopause online and offline for a long time. Visit http://menopause-now.info or http://menopause-web.info to read more about matters like stop hot flashes and menopause.

FSAD - Female Sexual Arousal Disorder Causes & Cures

by Sacha Tarkovsky

The American Medical Association has estimated that millions of US women suffer from what US doctors refer to as 'female sexual arousal disorder' or 'FSAD'.

While there is a huge amount of media dedicated to male libido female libido while a big problem is not so openly discussed.

So what causes FSAD and what can be done to help women with the problem. Lets look at the subject in more detail

It's important to stress fist of all that many women with FSAD have no problems with having orgasms.

The problem lies in their lack of libido and sex drive; they are simply not turned on by the prospect of having sex in the first place

For most women, lack of libido is only a temporary phenomenon.

Some will get over it by themselves and others can be helped by medical or psychosexual advice.

What are the causes of lack of libido in women?

As is the case with men, lack of desire in women can either physical or psychological.

Physical causes include

1. Anemia - which is very common in women, due to lack of iron loss during their periods (and of course in childbirth).

2. alcoholism.

3. drug abuse.

4. Generalized disorders, such as diabetes.

5. Post-baby coolness (PBC): this is the term for loss of libido that occurs after childbirth.

It is almost linked to changes in hormones that occur at this time, though as yet, no clear-cut changes in hormones have been identified by medical research.

The general trauma of childbirth plays a part - and after having a baby, many women are too exhausted to think about sex.

6. Prescribed drugs, particularly tranquillizers are a common cause for many women.

7. Hyperprolactinaemia - A rare disorder in which the pituitary gland is simply overactive.

We haven't mentioned the menopause as a physical cause of loss of desire.

However contrary to myth it doesn't usually cause loss of libido at all.

Many women tend to feel sexier unlike men (and have more orgasms) in the postmenopausal part of their life.

Psychological causes

these causes are all common, when a woman are having a bad time emotionally they Lose interest in sex and FSAD occurs.

Psychological causes include:

1. Depression

2. Stress and overwork

3. Anxiety

4. Problems from childhood

5. Sexual abuse

6. Lesbianism

7. Relationship issues

Women should consult their doctor for professional advice to isolate the problem causing FSAD

The big drug companies are searching for a drug that will turn women on but for now their is no drug on the market but there are a number of proven natural cures that can help, which we have covered in another article in this series.

Libido can be restored, although it takes more than a Viagra-like pill.

With men, HSD is usually related to an erection problem.

A woman's lack of sexual desire and libido i.e FSAD is often more complex, and many more factors are at work.

Use expert help to find out what is causing your loss of libido, then you can take the action.

There is no single cause for FSAD and there fore there is no single solution that works for all women.

For some women lack of libido is due to medical conditions, for some its psychological.

For most women stress and exhaustion can be a big factor and there are many herbal remedies on the market that will decrease stress increase libido and will help a women re discover her sex drive and libido.

Why Do I Have Hot Flashes During Pregnancy?

by Linda J Bruton

If youre experiencing hot flashes during pregnancy, youre not alone. Anywhere from 50% - 70% of women experience hot flashes or night sweats during pregnancy. Most women experience the sensation of increased warmth while pregnant. You may find yourself kicking off the covers in the middle of the night or trying to squelch an unquenchable thirst. If kicking off the covers is accompanied by soaked sheets, consider yourself normal.

As in menopause, estrogen levels fluctuate during pregnancy. Some studies show that low levels of estrogen are the root cause of hot flashes, but many more studies prove that its not a low level, but rather a fluctuating level of estrogen that set them off.

In pregnancy your body is going through so many changes that a hot flash or two may not concern you. But if these hot flashes become embarrassing or unbearable its time to seek treatment. Hot flashes during pregnancy must be approached differently than in menopause. Since pregnancy has its own set of "dos" and "donts" hot flash treatment must be handled with caution.

You must find a natural treatment for your hot flashes during pregnancy. That means that hormone therapy and the use of herbs are out. For obvious reasons you dont want to introduce hormones to control your hot flashes during pregnancy. But staying away from herbs may not be so obvious. Since herbs are natural it seems that you should be able to use them. Not so. Herbs can do all sorts of things to the body and when youre pregnant, plus interact with other medications you may be taking. Now is not the time to begin experimenting.

More natural and simple strategies will ease your hot flashes during pregnancy. Begin by wearing layers. Simply slip your sweater off when you begin to feel too warm. Dont be shy about turning on a fan or turning down the thermostat. When you cool down, readjust the temperature. And do always carry a beverage with you. Not only are the fluids good for you, but they will help fight off your hot flashes during pregnancy.

If the experience of hot flashes during pregnancy is just one more symptom to make your life miserable during pregnancy, hang in there. It does get better. Visit a support chat room or a local support group. Its amazing what a relief and comfort it is to talk with someone experiencing the same symptoms, aches and pains, and hot flashes as you are.

Menopause Symptoms

by Stein Ove Stien

Menopause is an integral part of womens life; no women can avoid the ultimate consequences. It is one step in a long reproductive degenerative, aging process, which almost begins silently at the age of 40 or so. Declining levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone cause various changes, which eventually lead to menopause.

Menopause symptoms can vary from woman to woman; changing hormone levels can cause a variety of symptoms which may last from a few months to a few years or longer. Some women may feel the worse of it, yet some other may feel very less of it. One of the most noticeable changes that occur during the onset of menopause is visible changes in occurrence of periods. Many women experience less regular periods; some have a lighter menstrual flow than normal; others face a heavier flow and may bleed a lot for many days. Periods may occur less than 3 weeks apart or last more than a week. There may be slight spotting between periods. Women, who have had previous problems with heavy menstrual periods and cramps, will usually find marked relief from these symptoms, when menopause starts.

One more noticeable symptom is the repeated occurrences of hot flashes, which is sudden feeling of heat in the upper part or all of womans body. Face and neck become extremely flushed. Flashes can be as mild as a light instant blush or just very severe enough to wake her from a sound sleep (also called night sweats). Most flashes usually last between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. The most common visible effects are the occurrences of red blotches all over the body.

Menopause symptoms also include remarkable changes in the genital and bladder behavior. As the estrogen levels change, the genital area can get drier and thinner. The resultant dryness makes sexual intercourse more painful. Vaginal and urinary tract infections are also very common during this time. Other problems can make it hard enough to hold urine long enough to get even to the bathroom. Urine leaks also occur during exercise, sneezing, coughing, laughing, or running.
Sexual behavior also undergoes tremendous changes during menopause. Some women find that their feelings about sex change drastically with menopause. Some have marked changes to the vagina, such as dryness, that makes sexual intercourse very painful. Others feel freer and sexier after menopause relieved that pregnancy is no longer a real worry.
Sleep problems are more common during menopause. Some women may find it very hard to sleep at night- they may not fall asleep easily or may wake too early. Once woken from sleep, they may find it very to go to sleep again. Hot flashes may also wake them up very easily.

One of the most common menopause changes is the change in mood. This may cause a marked shift in moods, caused by stress, family changes such as children leaving home, or feeling tired. Depression is how ever not a cause of menopause.

Drastic changes in body characteristics are another symptom of menopause. Some women find that their bodies change around the time of menopause. Women tend to get fattier and skin tends to get thinner too. Memory lapses do occur very frequently. Some women feel acute joint and muscle stiffness during menopause. Regular exercises will help them to over come many of these problems. Menopause is irreversible and is the gift of nature; it needs to be accepted whole heartedly and life style adjusted accordingly to the situation.

Menopause and Weight Loss

by Cathy Taylor

During menopause, many women report that the challenge of weight loss becomes even more difficult. The need to lose weight haunts women most of the time, and now more men are reporting the same struggle. When women hit menopause, weight gathers around the waist and hips; despite our best efforts to diet and exercise.

What we know is that this additional body fat is linked to your hormones. Most women follow a conventional low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet with lots of processed foods. Eventually this diet creates a condition known as insulin resistance; see Dr. Schwarzbein's book on the book list. When you are insulin resistant, your body converts calories into fat even when you are dieting. Menopause feels like a losing battle, but it doesn't have to be.

When you are stressed, as the body typically is during menopause, stress hormones block weight loss. Despite adequate food, the body acts as if it's in a famine and stores all spare calories as fat.
This leads to a metabolic disorder called adrenal fatigue.

Many women combine a high-stress life with a low-fat, high-carb diet which creates a powerful hormonal imbalance which causes us to gain weight. Yo-yo dieting exacerbates the problem.

Also, when a woman is on a high-carb diet she is often barraged with a craving for sweets. The body can't maintain optimal blood sugar and serotonin levels, so you snack and drink caffeine to feel better. That makes your insulin resistance worse and the vicious cycle of gaining weight is accelerated.

During perimenopause, women lose estrogen which is an added factor to this problem. As estrogen decreases, the body needs extra fat resources. Other factors that play into this problem, are unresolved emotional issues, food sensitivities, digestive issues such as yeast, and even heavy metal toxicity.

So what do we do?

The most important step is to GET HEALTHY!

Follow an eating plan like the one in the Schwarzbein Principle or the Zone Diet

You need protein at every meal, low carbs, very little to no processed food, and lots of fruit and vegetables

Drink plenty of water

Take nutritional supplements

Try Supplements Designed for Menopause

Stop weighing yourself, use your clothes as a gauge (focus on your health not your weight)

Start exercising - walk 4-5 times a week for 30 minute (it boosts metabolism)

Get help for emotional eating - you have to face your fears to get through them

Reduce the stress in your life, make time for fun and relaxation - strive for BALANCE

Learn to love yourself during menopause and accept who you are and at what stage in life you find yourself

Menopause can make weight loss even more challenging for both women and men. But with the right knowledge and some hard work, it can be done.

How Long Do Hot Flashes Last?

by Patsy Hamilton

Many women wonder how long do hot flashes last, but regretfully, there is no clear answer. Some women never have hot flashes, while some have them for years. Others have learned how to stop hot flashes naturally and that is the focus of this article.

The answers to how long do hot flashes last will vary depending on the women that you ask. Some women dont have them at all. Others have them for several years before menopause and continue to have them for several years following menopause. It is not unheard of for a woman to have them for as long as seven years, unless she learns how to stop them.

For many years doctors recommended hormone replacement therapy to stop hot flashes. Naturally, as with many medical treatments, we have now learned that hormone replacement therapy increases a womans risk of developing many different life threatening conditions, including blood clots and stroke. The health risks increase with continued use. Most experts now suggest that women, who must use HRT, should use it for the shortest time possible.

This creates an issue for women who have menopausal symptoms for five, six or seven years and if you ask a group of postmenopausal women, how long do hot flashes last, then several of them will likely tell you that they started in their mid forties and lasted till their early to mid fifties. Women who learned how to stop hot flashes naturally will likely tell you that they were only bothered by them if they stopped taking their supplements, drank too much coffee, too much wine or forgot to avoid their personal triggers.

Black cohosh can stop hot flashes naturally for most women, but adding red clover isoflavones or other phytoestrogens (plant components that have an estrogen-like effect) can be even more helpful. Some women have lifestyle issues that increase hot flash symptoms. Among these are cigarette smoking and chronic stress.

Women who smoke are also more likely to develop blood clots as a result of using hormone replacement therapy. So, of course, the best thing to do is quit. The American Cancer Society provides helpful literature for women who want to quit smoking. A support group can also be helpful.

Research has shown that chronic stress aggravates many medical problems, even causes some and lowers the bodys ability to fight off infectious diseases. Some women have found that stress management and relaxation techniques can stop hot flashes naturally.

Caffeine and other stimulants can trigger hot flashes, as can excess alcohol consumption. Certain foods trigger hot flashes in some women. A symptoms diary can help you find your own unique triggers.

No one can answer the question how long do hot flashes last for everyone. Most women find that once they have not had a period for a year or more, their menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes subside. To learn more about how to stop hot flashes naturally, please visit the Menopause and PMS Guide.
